Medical transcription is one of the fastest growing professions today, which gives an option to work from home. This is a well paid, yet comfortable job because this gives the flexibility to work from home. Medical transcription is the process by which one accurately transcribes the medical records dictated by the doctor, physician, nurse or any other health care professional into medical records. Some of the documents they produce include case history, discharge summery, autopsy report, diagnostic studies and referral letters. These records eventually become patient’s permanent file.
Medical transcription is a boon to those who prefer home based employment. Since it involves receiving the records by tape, digital system or voice files, the transcriber needs only a computer with word processing system, ear phone and foot pedal to control the start-stop. Most of the transcriptionist telecommute from their home based office. Digital transcription has changed this profession dramatically. That means, a transcriptionist can do his job sitting at home for a far away client. Due to this technology, tapes are being used less today. Home based medical transcriptionist have the liberty to work any time they want such as part time, evenings and weekends or even on calls at any time. Medical transcriptionists who work from home do so as independent contractors, setting their own hours of work and pay.
Medical transcription is a specialized job which requires certain skills and training. A good transcriber should have a thorough knowledge of medical terminologies. Medical language mastering is not a cake walk. It needs a two years course or at least a one year course which includes anatomy, medical terminology and English grammar punctuation. There are several training companies that provide transcription training and help with the job placements for those who graduated successfully from their organization. The general skills required for a transcriptionist are keyboarding, exceptionally good grammar and spelling skills and off course good listening and fast learning.
Medical establishments do not allow newbie’s to work from home. They usually seek some onsite experience before letting the transcriber to work from home. Job opportunities are good in this field especially for those who are certified.
The digital voice format that transcriptionist gets covers pretty much that happens between the doctor and the patient. So the transcriber should comply with the legal and ethical requirements for keeping the patient confidentiality.
Regardless of the economy, medical industry is prospering so as medical transcription job. Even with the bad economy, if you want to a have a stable career, medical transcription can be the one.
