What is Medical Transcription?

Medical Transcription is the transcription (typing) of medical records. When a patient is seen by a doctor’s visit must be documented in the patient medical records. How much will I earn?

MT incomes vary depending on what part of the world you live in

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average income of MTS in 2004 was between $ 11.50 and $ 16.32 per hour. MTs in the upper range of revenue (10%) earned 19.11 U.S. dollars per hour.

MTs self-employed earn a higher rate. As a self-employed business person, however, are responsible for paying their own taxes, health insurance, benefits, etc. However, many expenses can be deducted (ask your accountant for details).

Take into account the income of MTs vary depending on where you live, work transcribing specialty, if you work in a clinic, office, hospital or are self-employed. However, through networking with other MTs and my own experience as a business owner, I can say MTs of income with their own businesses can range from $ 25,000 a year to $ 200000 and a further year.

This is an average amount for informational purposes as it is difficult to determine an exact average. All people have different business goals. Some MTs are happy to work for themselves and earn 25,000 U.S. dollars doing what they love. Others are going to build a thriving business with great potential.

How fast can I become a MT?
This will depend on which course you take and how fast you learn and apply yourself.

Expect to spend anywhere from 8 months to 2 years. If you are a quick learner, have some experience in the field of medicine, good grammar, fast typing speed and a lot of common sense may be working in as little as 5 or 6 months to a course of study at home.

Please note the courses at their local university can have a time frame established by the speed with which they can complete their training MT. If you want to learn at their own pace of home study course may be an option for you.

At what speed should I write?

This, again, depends on the person. To be effective as an MT, it is necessary to write a speed of at least 70wpm. Some MTs type as fast as 120wpm. In medical transcription, the rate faster than you earn more (this applies if you work on a fee per line instead of per hour).

If you’re not a very fast typist, please do not let this stop you from becoming a MT. I’m going to let a little secret. When I started my MT course, did not have any real keyboard. In fact, the speed of my writing is the lowest in my class … embarrassingly low. With a little training and practice, speed typing is easy to improve.

Will I need to build a Web site?

You do not need a website unless you choose to have one. However, many MTs, as well as other business owners are beginning to realize the importance of a web presence. A site can only assist in presenting a professional image.

Will I work from home?

You can choose to work from home as a business owner with their own accounts or work from home to write for another company. Some firms give you the option of being either an employee at a lower rate per line or you can choose to be autonomous for a higher rate. If you are self-employed you will be responsible for their own taxes and benefits.

You can also choose to work in a doctor’s office, clinic, hospital or in any recruitment Mts.

Some MTs do both, work per hour of work outside the home and take on small accounts in the side. Medical Transcriptionist is a very flexible career, where you can really be in control of their own income.

Medical terminology is difficult to learn?

It depends on your background and how you learn fast. In general, I would say no. Each medical word is broken down into two parts. A prefix (the first part of a word) and a suffix (the last part of a word). The prefix and suffix are then connected by the vowel “O”. This is the basic structure of medical terminology.

You, therefore, to learn the medical terminology prefixes and suffixes. You can then use by combining these with the vowel “O” to form different medical terms. Here is an example.

Medical term – Dermatology

The breakdown of this word would be Dermato = prefix meaning in relation to the skin, or connective = vocal, logy = suffix related to the study.

The meaning of this word is the study of skin, dermatology.
Once the hang of it and they know all their prefixes and suffixes that is fairly simple.

The Stedman range of books is excellent, covering a wide range of specialties such as cardiology, Pathology, Dermatology, etc. The Stedman’s Medical Dictionary is a must have as well.

Saunders’ book product of Drake & Drake and the Quick Look-drug book are great resources for finding medicines.

How do I cope with a difficult doctor?

Dealing with doctors is not much different than dealing with people in general. You do not need to take into account the doctor are busy people. They are often overworked and stressed. They also have the ultimate responsibility of the patient in their hands and they are the ones who give the final approval of its medical transcription.

Most doctors are reasonable and fair. There are times when doctors, like anyone else, you get annoyed for some reason or another. The best way to deal with this is not to take personally and be professional at all times. If a doctor is less than satisfied with their work, and then remember that it is the client and in business you should try to please his client.

Always put yourself in the position of the other person and try to understand why they are acting the way they are. And bear in mind that is not acceptable to tolerate the abuses under any circumstances. However, there is a fine line between abuse and someone just blowing off a little steam. Once again, try to see things from the perspective of another person before jumping to conclusions.

How often should I bill my customers?

This will be decided between you and your client. In most cases, it is a rule that bill twice a month, once the 1 month and another 16.

Most MTs recruit other MTs who are self-employed contractors. There is no need for the employees and be responsible for benefits, taxes, etc. The contractors are in business for themselves. You must have a contract in place explaining that do not guarantee a fixed amount of work (unless you want). The contract also are self-employed and they provide a way to the end of the 1099 fiscal year.

It is your responsibility to the end of each year to provide its contractors with a Form 1099 so they can submit their taxes.
