As Transcriptionist doctor asked me to convey several times a month, how is started in this business. So many people today want to work from home, especially mothers with children. That is the main reason I started my business at home ten years ago, so it could be there for my daughter. I did not want someone else taking care of her after school instead of me.
It’s really hard not to start a medical transcription business. The start-up costs are low compared with many other companies at home. You need a form of education, through courses of study at home or attend their local university. You do not need a degree in medical transcription to start a business either. In a short period of time, usually nine months or less, may be working from the comfort of your own home, like me.
It takes a bit of equipment, such as a computer, a printer, a transcriber, and some reference books. All of which can be purchased second-hand if necessary. The latest and best equipment is not necessary to get started.
Now, there are some special skills you need, apart from education, including:
– Excellent grammar
– Good listening skills
– Basic computer with a word processing program
– Skills Research
– Ability to write – their speed increases with experience
– Must be detail-oriented
– Ability to work on their own
– Ability to maintain periods of work and be a self-motivator
You also need some computer programs as a doctor and a spellchecker word expander utility to reduce the number of troops to write you. Some programs, like Microsoft Word ® include this type of utility. It’s the best invention of now, in my opinion.
Accounting background is necessary but not difficult. A good book is good to have when it comes to taxes and give advice on saving money with tax deductions for your business.
Medical transcription is usually paid by the amount of work transcribed. Therefore, it is quite normal to charge its customers for the line. If loading 13 cents per line and type 200 lines per hour (this is a very comfortable speed to type) your hourly rate that end up being around $ 26.00.
Being self-employed has some pitfalls. One must consider, as with any business based at home, once they become self-employed who are responsible for ensuring their own health insurance, and putting away money for retirement.
However, there are many positive things about being self-employed, as I am sure you can imagine. For me, what I like most is the flexibility I have with my time. If I want to work late in the day that I can, and if I want to work early in the morning, that depends on me. Running a home-based medical transcription business is a lot of fun.
Medical transcription is not for everyone, and it is important before venturing into any business that you weigh the pros and cons of everything and do what is best for your situation.
